Spacer Testing Method

The following spacer systems were tested by Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI) on March 26, 2009. ATI conducted a computer model thermal analysis of each spacer system using Window 5.2.17 and Therm 5.2.14 computer software developed by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Simulations were conducted to determine an interior surface temperature and U-valve when modeled in a generic wood frame. Each spacer system was modeled in 7/8" overall i.g. with 3/16" clear glass separated by a 1/2" spacer. A generic wood frame 1- 1/2" high by 3-1/4" wide was simulated with the spacer systems above. Each spacer was simulated 3/16" below the sightline with butyl sealant for single seal spacers and PIB and butyl or polyurethane for dual seal spacers.

Simulations were conducted at conditions for NFRC 100-2004 and general guidelines were followed. It should be noted that frame and sash design will vary the differences made by spacer changes significantly. Typically greater changes are shown with vinyl products and little change may show with aluminum products and wood construction typically would fall in middle.
